Addressing the most significant cybersecurity issues confronting the United States is an ongoing effort. However, it must be accelerated if we are to keep up with the rapid evolution of this huge problem.

Given all that is going on these days in terms of cyberattacks and threats, development of new technologies and techniques needed today and over the next few years is essential. This requires strong collaboration between research, industry and government organizations. There are many areas of research that are currently getting that level of collaboration. Artificial intelligence (AI) is just one of them. We must also include machine learning (ML) as well.

AI-integrated and -enabled cybersecurity holds substantial promise to improve national defense as well as defense of the private sector. Some believe that AI efforts must be accelerated given that the demand for cybersecurity professionals is far outpacing the supply — and that shortfall is projected to get worse.

A fair amount of applied research is being directed at defending against previously unknown/undetected (zero-day) flaws that are increasingly being targeted. Some have gone as far as to proclaim AI is the future of cybersecurity. Others are of the opinion that we are far away from that point, but are moving closer.

"The debate about whether artificial intelligence is real is over," according to IBM Chief Financial Officer Martin Schroeter. "And we're getting to work to solve real business problems."

Clearly, this is one area that deserves regular monitoring! It could very well help address many of the cyber defense challenges faced by everyone.
